Sobeys Projects throughout Atlantic Canada
The Sobeys store on Panavista Drive in Dartmouth,
Nova Scotia is a typical project. For this store BMR designed
enclosures around the roof-top mechanical equipment to reduce
noise. Since the enclosures would create snowdrifts, the roof
structure was designed to support the additional loads. The building
was carved into the side of a hill next to a number of residential
buildings. This meant designing several large cast-in-place reinforced
concrete retaining walls, including one which supported the roof
structure while resisting 20 feet of earth pressure.
Along with extensive work on Sobeys retail
outlets, BMR has been responsible for the design of many retail
and commercial buildings for Sobeys sister companies throughout
Atlantic Canada, including a four-storey addition to Sobeys head
office in Stellarton, shopping centres, movie theatres and department
stores. The huge Sobeys distribution centres in Oromocto, Debert
and Stellarton required special consideration. In some cases,
the whole building essentially functions as a giant freezer, requiring
excellent insulation and heating pipes under the building to prevent
the ground from freezing.
